A Gathering of the People of Waipori – 26th and 27th March, Easter, 2016
The Waipori Reunion is happening in Lawrence, and Waipori, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 26th and 27th 2016.
That is Easter Weekend and these dates were picked to enable people to travel comfortably.
An informal Meet and Greet will be held on the Friday evening at Gabriel’s Cafe and Bar from 6pm for those already in the area.
The main venue will the Simpson Park Stadium in Lawrence and we start Registrations from 10am and open formally at 1130am on Saturday morning.
The stadium will serve as our central point for displays. We invite people to bring their memorabilia of Waipori, and the people associated. Photographs and stories bring these people back to us. There will be an evening meal.
SATURDAY EVENING MEAL – $50 for 3 course meal, starters, main and dessert. Drinks available to purchase at venue and our own Waipori wines will be available.
To honour our ancestors and the townspeople we will have a short memorial service in the cemetery and unveil the graves that are being restored. We will be about an hour here depending on the weather, some may wish to stay longer and to cover this we have a 2 hour lunch break at the Waipori Station shearing shed.
Some gold panning is a must for the young, or young at heart, to give the opportunity of re-living a little of our ancestors’ experience. To keep this safe we ask that parents are with their children, and we have created a route handy to the cemetery where some special sands might be worth checking for colour (GOLD!) Volunteers will assist and show children what to do.
Lunch at Waipori Station shearing shed
Social time with light fare and drinks provided by The Lee Stream Hall Committee
Soup and Roll for $10, and Devonshire Tea/Coffee for purchase as a fundraiser. Cash only (no eftpos).
Packed lunches are also available to pre-order at the Wild Walnut Cafe in Lawrence.
The weather will be very much a part of our trip and is not negotiable. Unless it is a howler with sleet or worse the trip will go ahead – and we will just have to live with it – just like our ancestors did.
4WD at 2pm. We will be undertaking a 4WD trip to the top of the lake visiting some particular sites. Private 4WD transport will be available for some of those who do not have vehicles, or want to relax and let someone else take the responsibility. We meet at the crossroads for Waipori Station and we all travel together in convoy for safety and to meet the Station Managers wishes.
