HISTORY OF WAIPORI CEMETERY: (NZSG record)
The Records & Plan of the Cemetery are non existent despite the endeavours of the Tuapeka Council to locate them. The Council, however does have a list of burials & dates from Headstones together with a second list of names of burials which possibly took place at Waipori.
The Cemetery is situated on a hillside above Lake Mahinerangi. It is by a tall pine Plantation on the north side of the Lake, lying peacefully on the hill, rather overgrown & surrounded on all sides by concrete walls. The Headstones date from 1865 & are memorials to several well known families of the district. However, it seems likely there were burials there as early as 1861 although these have not been proven. Death Registrations did not begin at Lawrence until 1876 but some deaths were registered at West Taieri or even Dunedin. Situated among the trees of the plantation are two Memorials described towards the end of this Transcript.
We sincerely thank the Tuapeka Council for their co-operation in providing us with the information held by the Council & for the Photocopying of our transcript. We are indeed grateful to those concerned who checked the Death Registers to confirm suggested burials & so make this Record more complete – though not completely so.
We acknowledge with appreciation the material gathered & passed on to us by Mr.Alfred Holdaway of 63 Cannington Rd. Dunedin, an early member of our Dunedin Group.
Our thanks also to Mrs.Marguerite Parson (nee Cotton) for supplying the district Roll of Honour as published in her booklet “Waipori Centennial 1861-1969” & to the Publishers/Reed Methuen Ltd. for permission to extract information & a photograph of the cemetery from
“GOLD TRAILS OF OTAGO” by June A. Wood.
